Every now and then I’m floored when I see a new video game for the first time. When there is such a strong sense of visual, narrative and interactive identity, I can’t help but want to know more. Right now that new game is Hell clock. This roguelike ARPG may look like a grim and oppressive Hades at first glance, but it has such a unique presentation that it quickly becomes more than that. Best of all, you now have a limited time to play Hell Clock on Steam.

If you’ve played enough ARPGs or rogue states, Hell clock will immediately feel familiar. You take up arms as Pajeú, who is thrust into a “demon-filled purgatory” that also happens to be filled with endless horrors. You delve deeper and deeper into a dimly lit dungeon from an isometric perspective, forging structures, shooting monsters, and mastering various skills to progress with each attempt. Hell Clock has the replayability of Hades and the demonic threats of games like Diabloall rolled into one.

However, Hell Clock has more to offer than that. Brazilian developer Rogue Snail set the game during the 19th century War of Canudos, where “each descent offers new opportunities to right historical wrongs.” You’ll be pitted against the demons of Brazil’s past, present and future, seemingly in both a literal and figurative sense. This takes place over a three-act story campaign, but there is also an endgame where all your equipment, skills and abilities are put to the test.

It also helps that Hell Clock is beautiful to look at. The dark and grimy dungeon floors are punctuated by bright abilities, and the bold cutscenes add even more contrast. From the moment I saw the Hell Clock key image I was hooked and I can’t wait to give this ARPG a try.

“When we started working on this game, we asked ourselves, ‘What would it be like if an entire Diablo season or Path of Exile competition lasted just 20 minutes?’” said Mark Venturelli, CEO of Rogue Snail. “And that’s what Hell Clock is: a roguelike that encourages aggressive and fast-paced gameplay.”

“Hell Clock is also a very personal project for all of us at Rogue Snail. In my 17-year career, this is my first project spoken mainly in Brazilian Portuguese and also completely based on Brazilian history and culture. We feel we are ready to tell our version of the Canudos story – not only to the entire world, but also to many fellow Brazilians who may not be fully aware of the grim events and consequences that will continue until the can still be felt today. ”

Just like creating your next build in Diablo, Path of Exile or Hades, Rogue Snail gives you a lot of options in Hell Clock. There are tons of ancient relics to track down and combine for builds, plenty of abilities that give you knife attacks or hand weapons, and even what looks like a molten whip of sorts.
